Smart Growth and Affordable Housing

Irvine was incorporated in 1971. At the time of the 1970 census, Irvine’s population was just over 10,000. Today, at almost 270,000, we are the third largest city in Orange County and the 16th most populous city in California. As a master-planned community, growth was anticipated. Balanced, managed growth, with the necessary infrastructure in place to support that growth.

Unfortunately, in recent years, good planning has been compromised by bad politics, greedy developers and a complete lack of vision. The City Council’s greatest responsibility is over land use planning. When developers spend millions to help elect people who will serve their interests, the public pays a price. As your City Councilmember, I will always work to ensure that what is planned and built is consistent with Irvine’s high community standards.

We need more solar and energy efficient housing options. We need housing that is affordable at all levels, so seniors, students and people who work in our city can live in our city, reducing commutes and congestion on our city streets and freeways. We need better transit options so residents, students, senior citizens and workers are not dependent on an automobile for all their mobility needs.

And as we grow, we also need to respect our existing villages, consider impacts on local schools and preserve, protect and enhance our parks and open space. As your representative on the Irvine City Council, I will act to preserve Irvine’s legacy of success and vision. Implementing smart planning standards today will ensure a better tomorrow for all of us.
